New York Yankees avoid sweep to keep World Series alive

Anthony Volpe hit a grand slam to tie a World Series record as the New York Yankees defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-4 to avoid a four-game sweep in the best-of-seven championship round.

Volpe homered to give the Yankees the lead in the third inning after the Dodgers began the game strongly only to be overtaken before a final surge that made it 3-1 in the series.

Freddie Freeman made the Dodgers 2-0 in the first inning at Yankee Stadium, he became the first player in a World Series history to hit a home run in each of the opening four games.

He also broke the batting record of hitting a home run in six consecutive World Series games, where he hit two for the Atlanta Braves when they defeated the Houston Astros in 2021.

Alex Verdugo replenished with one and before Volpe candy the Yankees for the win.

A Will Smith home run again brought the Dodgers within two, 6-4, but back-to-back home runs from home town hero Austin Wells and Gleyber Torres in the eighth effectively put the game out of reach.

A fan wearing a Yankees hat was ejected for reaching into the field to pull the ball from the glove of Dodgers left-fielder Mookie Betts as he was preparing to catch a hit off the fence against Torres, who was declared out for obstructing a fan despite being a paid spectator.

This year’s Yankees are planning on achieving what no other team has ever done before, to win the World Series after being down 3-0.

Of the play-off series, only the 2004 Boston Red Sox team that had Roberts, who is now the Dodgers’ manager did manage to overturn such a deficit.

The fifth game of the series occurs in Yankee stadium on Wednesday night before heading back to Los Angeles in case of necessity.
