A look at NFL Thursday Night Football
The trends seem to be quickly turning against the Jets in their season. “Gang Green” has now lost five games in a row and three times since they fired head coach Robert Saleh. The TNF matchup is perfect for Halloween now because the Jets have become spooky dark right now.
On the other hand, the Texans have been as good as expected in the preseason so far. Houston arrives to this match on the back of a desperately close 23-20 victory at home to the Indianapolis Colts. As we approach the regular season, they sit comfortably atop the division of the AFC South they claim…On the other hand, the New York Jets arrive at Week 9 after a hard-fought 25-22 loss to the New England Patriots. They were the first team in NFL history to be on the wrong end of a 20-0 score while turning the ball over zero times and surrendering less than 250 yards on the night. Handled teams in that case had been 750-0 previous teams.
The Jets defense was coming back with several players it lost to injury the previous week. Reddick has now joined the team after his holdout, Carter II and Reed are back in the secondary. Having been third in Defensive DVOA for the whole of last season, the Jets’ defense sits twentieth at the moment, as pointed out by FTN.
Texan’s defense has been outstanding, ranking third with 0.19 EPA per play and first in success rate. Houston has limited four of their last five opponents to 21 points or fewer and sits just 2nd in defensive DVOA as the team enters Week 9.
The Texans running game, led by Joe Mixon, will continue to try and stack up production of the ground game. Mixon had already started in four football games without getting injured and has been a maven in all. He is gaining a career best of 4.9 yards per carry. He was finally signed recently at the age of 28 and he has managed to score in all the previous four matches if he is healthy. They have conceded the 10th-highest number of rushing yards to the opponents.
Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud will be without his top two receiving weapons: Nico Collins with Stefon Diggs. Collins was placed on the injured reserve list after a hamstring injury he obtained in the Week 5 game, and Diggs left the game in Sunday’s game against the Colts on a non-contact knee injury.
The Jets will be eager to post the first victory after the week three defeat.
This will be the third game since the Jets traded for Davante Adams from the Raiders, and his first at home with the Jets’ flight crew. Of course, the jets have given Aaron Rodgers many weapons and told everybody to go all in. For some time now, there has been chemistry on the field between Rodgers and Adams. He and Favre were teammates for eight seasons with the Packers. Adams had more than 100 catches, 1,000 yards, and 11 touchdowns in total in his last three healthy years with Rodgers in Green Bay.
That can be seen in the Jets offence where they have talented young players such as Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson. Halting the progress of this unit comes easier said than done for Texans coach DeMeco Ryans.
The Texans are currently enjoying one of their best seasons while the Jets are struggling for their season on Thursday night.
