Garrett Wilson’s one-handed TD grab leaves Jets awestruck

Down in the fourth quarter and his team on the ropes, wide receiver Garrett Wilson gave the New York Jets and their fans exactly what they wanted, and perhaps what Odell Beckham Jr. desperately needs — a taste of OBJ 2.0 in the form of one impressive one-handed touchdown grab in the final frame of a 21-13 win over the Houston Texans Thursday night in East Rutherford.

Wilson’s second TD of 26-yards was the big topic of a victorious locker room post the game. There are people in my timeline suggesting that it was disgusting similar to Odell Beckham Jr celebrating catch for the Giants a decade ago in the same stadium but different end zone.

Others said it was Michael Jordan like. Indeed, Wilson – flying mid-air – seemed to personify the Jumpman logo with his legs spread apart and his right hand up in the air as he made the third and 21 yard reception of Aaron Rodgers and the pass intercepted by the Texans’ Kamari Lassiter.

A observer might have thought he was Jordan Kinlaw, defensive tackle, told the Chicago Sun-Times. “Unbelievable.”

Game officials first declared Wilson out of bounds because he got only one foot down before stumbling, but the Jets were granted a replay when it was determined that his left lower leg was in the back of the end zone. As per the norms set across for measuring, one shin is equal to two feet.

“Oh, my goodness,” said interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, who will take over from LeBeau when the game begins. That is exactly what I was saying to the ref when they were discussing it on the screen. I’m like ‘Just for the sake of documenting you have to let it remain just so it goes to history. It would be as great as the Odell catch. It was amazing.”

In Davante Adams’ words, he only got to watch the replay after the match was through. He made a laughing stock of Wilson over the catch by saying he been using it as his new endorsement deal since it resembled the Jumpman logo.

‘I said to him that he might get sacked from Adidas after that one,’ Adams said. Seems like that one simply got the impression he is going to Jumpman with me. We’re going to see. I will discuss that one with some folks. I won’t be able to tell Mike that they will replace the logo just because that was a very difficult catch for anyone.

Not only was it acrobatic, but it was crucial, as the Jets (3-6) ended a five-game losing streak to extend their unlikely playoff aspirations. Holmes finally got on the board a touchdown on the last three drives of the game in a virtual must-win situation after a dreadful first half.

The usually reliable Wilson was limited on a critical drop in a Week 7 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers to finish the day with nine receptions for 90 yards. His first and only scoring play of the night was an amazing one handed catch of a 21-yard pass. That was nice, but the second touchdown could be the defining moment of the season for him.

So I was like ‘That’s a good one, that’s a good one.’ ‘And it’s got to count,’ Wilson said.” ‘I remember said to all of them, I’m like ‘y’all gassing me up too early.’ This has to count y’all, let’s chill. What I remember is when it counted, I was like, ‘Yeah, all right, now y’all can tell me whatever.’

Beckham made the most memorable catch against the Dallas Cowboys when Wilson was 14 years old. Wilson was at his family home in Texas as his father to watch.

Man, Odell’s it was different he said. “He got two feet down. The ball was going to land out of bounds and you could count on Odell for it. This was Odell against the Cowboys. That was the one. I’m blessed that this even came up in that convo. I’m honored.”

Wilson’s touchdown gave the Jets a 14-10 lead with 12:54 left. The icing on the cake was when Rodgers went 22-for-32 in passing and threw his third scoring pass to Adams a 37-yard pass – Adams first with the Packers after being traded from the Las Vegas Raiders.

Rodgers acknowledged that he was “terrible” in the first half, attempting just 32 passes yards, a figure that had been equalled only once in his career. The low point came when rookie wide receiver Malachi Corley, had his first and only NFL carry and fumbled it out of the end zone for a touch back which was a terrible mistake.

Corley, who took the ball on a jet sweep, was only touched after he picked the ball up and had clear access to the end zone but he had let go the ball before he got into the end zone. That informed a touchdown that Adams celebrated as if it were his first but a replay indicated that he failed to make it by an inch.

After the play, Rodgers refer to it as a silly play. Corley did not dwell and discuss it since he departed before the media were let into the locker room. Ulbrich said he was ‘definitely frustrated when telling the truth — and angry as well’. But can you just imagine the potential for this kid to take and develop from this experience only? ”I guarantee it and 10 years from now when the same man is still playing in the league, that won’t happen again.

The Jets were down after a lethargic and unimpressive first 45 minutes, but then Wilson scored. For those who hadn’t witnessed their performance before, this was the kind of cricketing that would leave them abuzz for a long time, as they mighty batsman proceeded to score yet another century raising their total from eighty odd to a hundred and odd.

“Yeah that’s for sure,” Wilson said. Merely on the grounds that it’s the stage is on – it’s in the NFL. However, during my Little League days, boy, I did have some catches now. For real, bro. ‘So it was like going back to being a kid again a little,’ said Lamb.”
