Dub Jones, 1950s NFL Star Who Scored Record Six Touchdowns in One Game, Dies at 99

Dub Jones, who played fullback for the NFL Cleveland Browns in the 1950s and once scored six touchdowns in a game, succumbed Saturday in Ruston, La. He was 99.

Jones, who started in the NFL as a halfback before becoming a defensive back, wingback and tailback in a 10-year career, joined the Browns in 1946 and remained with them until 1955. In the golden years of Cleveland, the team earned three championships in the NFL and two championships previously within the Browns’ initial league, the All-America Football Conference.

The LSU and Tulane product did not have any stint with NFL before going directly to the AAFC; mearly playing for the Miami Seahawks and Brooklyn Dodgers before joining the Browns.

Jones played for AAFC Cleveland where he won the title in 1948 and 1949 seasons, On NFL he was champion in 1950, 1954, and 1955. He received the honour of All-Pro in ‘51.

For the trivia-conscious football fans, Jones is best remembered for what he did on the 25th of November in 1951. During a 42-21 Browns victory over the Bears, Jones, who had four rushing and two passing touchdowns, was responsible for all six Cleveland touchdowns.

He stated that players that have scored six touchdowns in NFL games are four, namely Duluth Eskimos fullback Ernie Nevers in 1926, Jones, Bears halfback Gale Sayers in 1965, and the New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara in 2020.
