Edmonton — During the UFC Edmonton event Cody Gibson said even after winning the bantamweight bout and submitting Chad Anheliger, he disliked his fighting style.
It’s kind of frustrating to me that I didn’t do great on the yell test. I’ll have to go back and watch the fight but you’re always weighing position over submission, risk versus reward,” Gibson (21-10) told various media including Cageside Press post the fight, at the Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta. “I should have gone for the pass more tonight, or been more aggresive, I felt like I played it a little safer than I needed to.”
That, coming from a P Merrill, who gave him a 10-8 score en route to a unanimous decision victory – one that Gibson had dictated much of the fight on the ground. Still, it’s not the type of bonus-winning performance Gibson is looking to put on in his fights.
“I’m trying to hurt somebody. I’m trying to go in there – I’m not making a million dollars a fight right now. So my silver lining is the bonus. Of course you want to win fights, that is why it is important to stay here, winning. But I’m here to entertain the fans, knowing fully well Chad was expecting it. That’s all that I meant by it, that I was a little disappointed in myself.”
Now there are the fans to think of and Gibson seemed to enjoy a thoroughly good time during the fight week, meeting with several UFC followers.
“Just consider how many people, how many millions of them, are starved for live fights. You end up coming to a place like this, a fight town, I have made a lot of friends since I got here.” Gibson was even gracious enough to provide tickets to his local supporters as well as a firefighter. “You want to put on a show.”
Gibson came into the bout with two straight wins and is now an LX second stint fighter in the promotion. His first started in 2014 and when it dawned, it was fight night against the notorious Aljamain Sterling. However as we go through losses like Aljo, or one that has occurred still another fighter, Douglas Silva de Andrade, still fighting in the UFC, Gibson confessed to not feeling self assured.
“I am friends with Aljamain even now, I talked with him today since he texted me advice because one of his teammates fought this man that I fought tonight,” Gibson said. ‘Then he had some advice as he said ‘look for this look for that. It is therefore encouraging to remain in touch with him. But that is what you would assume, isn’t it? I’ve fought the who’s who, I’ve fought multiple guys who have fought for the belt, you would think I’d be oozing with confidence, but I’m not. But that is the true position.”
I think it is a process that I have had to kind of figure out in my head why I do not feel that I deserve the things that happen to me and that is one of the things that I always knew has to be dealt with inside. “It’s still one area that I am still struggling with I would say.”
