The CIF San Diego Section high school football playoffs started Friday and there was little upset.
In all the 24 first-round matches that were played only two upsets were registered; No. 9 Del Norte beat No. 8 Oceanside, 42-35 in Division 1 and No. 12 Monte Vista stunned 5th seeded Fallbrook, 34 – 33 in a D5 fixture.
Other than that all the favourite teams came out truans. (Go down to read all the scores).
In a manner befitting a section, the Open Division — the highest of eight divisions in the tournament — all had byes.
Lincoln, Californi’s No. 12 team overall, is the No. 1 seed in the Open, a four-team tournament which begins play with semifinal play on Nov. 15.
Completing that field is number two La Costa Canyon, third seed Cathedral Catholic and number four Mission Hills. Championship will be on the 23rd of November this year. The outcome of most of the other divisions is expected to be arrived at on Nov. 30.
The Division 1 tournament which involves twelve schools started on Friday although only the top four teams – San Marcos, Carlsbad, Granite Hills and El Camino – have what is termed as first round byes.
Other top seeds are University City of Division 2, Central of Division 3, Ramona of Division 4, Vista of Division 5, Calipatria of 5-AA and St Joseph Academy of Division 8 man.
Current titleholders are Granite Hills, Open; St Augustine, Division One: Del Norte, Division Two: La Jolla Country Day, Division Three: Mount Miguel, Division Four: Sweetwater, Division Five; Holtville,Division Five – AA and Foothills Christian: Division Six.
All section champions except 8-man move to CIF Southern California Bowl regional on Dec. 6 to 7 and the winner gets to State Bowl championships scheduled on Dec. 13 to14 in Southern California.
